In many remote regions of Madagascar, access to a reliable electricity grid is non-existent. When the sun sets, school activity ceases and the premises become vulnerable. Unlike schools in urban centers, rural public schools often lack on-site staff housing, leaving resources unsupervised and creating significant operational challenges. The Challenges of Darkness

The absence of consistent lighting creates three critical barriers to education and safety:

Heightened Safety Risks: Students and teachers traveling in the early morning or after dusk face increased risks on unlit paths. This often deters attendance and creates a pervasive sense of insecurity.
Vulnerability of Assets: Without lighting, school buildings and their limited educational resources—often provided by donors—become targets for vandalism and theft.
Underutilized Infrastructure: A lack of light prevents the school from being used for evening adult literacy classes, community meetings, or extra-curricular activities, limiting its potential as a community hub.

A child’s ability to learn is fundamentally tied to their physical well-being. In remote regions of Madagascar, economic hardship often leads to food insecurity, which directly results in poor school attendance and diminished concentration. At NORA-Madagascar, we believe that education begins with a reliable meal.

Our Strategic Approach

We do more than provide food; we build sustainable, community-led systems that ensure long-term health and educational success:

The Foundation of Learning: A consistent, nutrient-dense meal provides the energy required for cognitive focus, reducing illness-related absences and academic struggle.
A Catalyst for Attendance: In vulnerable areas, the guarantee of a school meal is a proven incentive that dramatically boosts enrollment and daily attendance.
Community-Driven Sustainability: Our programmes are powered by local Parent Associations. By involving families in the preparation and management of meals, we ensure the programme is a shared responsibility rather than a temporary aid.
Economic Integration: We source ingredients locally whenever possible, linking our nutrition efforts to the local economy to foster regional resilience.
Strategic Nutrition: The Closed-Loop Model: We have launched a Blue Economy Initiative Pilot with the objective to secure livelihoods for fishers while providing a consistent, high-protein foundation for student nutrition.

Building Foundations – School Kitchens

The idea for NORA-Madagascar initially began with a fundamental observation: many local school kitchen huts were in disrepair! Today, we have built our first permanent school kitchen at the elementary school in Agnafiafy on Île Sainte Marie, a facility that will nourish 240 students and we are building on that succes. A school kitchen is more than a building; it is the engine of a functional education system.

Our Infrastructure Model

We move beyond temporary fixes to construct permanent, high-quality facilities. Our approach to Essential Infrastructure is defined by:

Community Anchoring: Every structure is built in partnership with local families. This fosters a sense of ownership, ensuring the building is protected for decades.
Durable Craftsmanship: We combine safety standards with specialized local techniques, ensuring construction funds remain within the local economy.
Resource Resilience: From precision-crafted interlocking joints to traditional material curing, our buildings are designed to withstand Madagascar’s unique environmental challenges.

The Blueprint for Change

The Agnafiafy School Kitchen is more than a standalone project; it is a successful, scalable blueprint for embedding education and nutrition into vulnerable communities. However, the need for durable infrastructure is widespread. Our assessments of other villages across the island reveal the same challenge: inadequate facilities that directly hinder a school’s ability to provide consistent meals.
